Key Features & Components

planetary gearboxOutput Shaft Bearings

  • Large, tapered roller bearings on most models for excellent start-up torque
  • Designed for high load capacity and durability

Optional Flanges

  • Interchangeable with other manufacturers

Gears

  • Heat-treated alloy steel internal gears
  • Heat-treated ductile iron or steel alloy ring gears

Lubrication

Proper lubrication is critical to planetary drive performance.

  • Use EP 80/90 gear lube for most applications
  • Maintain proper oil levels
  • Change oil after first 50 hours of operation
  • Change oil every 500 hours thereafter
  • Reduces wear and maximizes bearing and gear life
  • Failure to properly lubricate will void warranties

Service Factors

  • Standard ratings based on 1.00 service factor (no recurrent shock loading)
  • Adjust torque capacity using appropriate service factor

Load & Duration Guidelines:

  • Occasional (½ hour): 0.80 (uniform), 1.00 (moderate), 1.50 (heavy)
  • Intermittent (3 hrs/day): 1.00, 1.25, 1.75
  • Up to 10 hrs/day: 1.25, 1.50, 2.00
  • 24 hrs/day: 1.50, 1.75, 2.25
  • Intermittent = less than 10% of each hour

Thermal Capacity

  • May be less than mechanical capacity depending on load and cooling
  • Prototype testing recommended
  • Maximum operating temperature: 200°F

Safety Factor

  • 2:1 static load safety factor at intermittent ratings

Back Driving & Brakes

  • Back driving torque is critical in sizing drives and brakes
  • Hydraulic systems must prevent “lock-up” or excessive deceleration torque
  • Spring-applied, hydraulically released parking brakes often required
  • Minimum holding torque: 115% of motor driving torque
  • Maximum holding torque: 125% of motor driving torque
  • Combined factors can create back driving torque exceeding 2× input torque
