Most hydraulic motors are not compatible with over-running load applications. Some will lock-up while others sustain internal wear and possible damage.
Applications where over-running can occur are winch drives, conveyor drives and vehicle towing. Our Rol-Seal motor with its floating seal element design is ideal for these applications.
At Von Ruden we actually took a standard production Rol-Seal motor after it came off the production test stand, mounted it so we could externally drive the shaft, and with the ports open to atmosphere drove it for 2.5 hours at 1,500 rpm.
After the 2.5 hour test, a thorough inspection of motor was made with the results being no damage or apparent wear.
We don't recommend running Rol-Seal without fluid flow, but when you are
confronted with an application where the motor is subjected to cavitation often found in an over-running condition, you might consider the Von Ruden Rol-Seal motor. It won't let you down.
